University Residency Requirement
All incoming first-time freshmen from outside SDSU’s local admissions area* are required to live on campus their freshman and sophomore years.
Additionally, all local students in the Weber Honors College are required to live on campus during their freshman year.
SDSU recognizes that exemptions to the residency requirement may be appropriate in certain circumstances and may be requested by completing the Exemption Request Form. More information regarding exemptions may be found on the Exemption Requests page.
Students who are in SDSU’s local admissions area are not required to live on campus, but are encouraged to still apply. Local students who complete their license agreement and submit their initial payment by the Intent to Enroll deadline are guaranteed on-campus housing their freshman year.
*Students are in the local admissions area if they will graduate from a high school in San Diego County located south of state route 56 and extending eastward or from a high school in Imperial County.
COVID-19 Update (2020-21)
Following physical distancing guidelines set by county, state and federal authorities, SDSU suspended the university residency requirement for the 2020-21 academic year. The 2020-21 academic year refers to fall 2020 though spring 2021 only. Starting fall 2021, the university residency requirement (as stated above) will be reinstated.
