Olmeca to Maya Transition 2019
Olmeca Hall residents during fall of 2018 will become the first group of students to transition and move into the newly renovated Maya Hall for the spring 2019 semester. Subsequently, Olmeca Hall will close to undergo renovation during the spring semester.
Maya Hall is the adjacent building of Olmeca Hall, and renovations will include a complete refresh of student rooms, restrooms, laundry rooms, kitchen, and common areas. Student rooms will receive new flooring, window coverings, paint, HVAC and modular furniture. Restrooms will have new fixtures, toilet stalls and showers. Common area renovations will include a new kitchen, updated STAR Center, a pool table, furniture and TV’s.

1) Attend the Building-Wide Meeting (Wednesday, October 3 - 4:30pm)
Representatives from Housing Administration aund Residential Education will provide details about the transition logistics, timeline and expectations.
2) Take a Tour (11/1, 11/19, 11/27, 11/28 - 3:30pm)
Tours will be offered of renovated Maya on a first-come, first-served basis for up to 20 residents at a time.
3) Pack Your Belongings (prior to Thursday, December 20, 2018)
All personal items must be packed into the university-provided transition bins before leaving for winter break and identified with the provided labels. You can check out five transition bins and receive your labels at the Olmeca Seminar Room on 12/6, 12/7, 12/8, 12/10, 12/11 from 10am - 6pm.
Personal bins or boxes may not be used.
Items that are too large to pack in the bins (such as rugs, bedding, surfboards, etc.) must also be appropriately identified with the provided labels. Failing to pack and label any items appropriately will result in the items being moved to lost and found. More details regarding packing instructions will be provided to you at the transition bin check-out.
Once belongings are packed in the transition bins, please stack and organize your items to be moved. Your bins and labeled belongings will be transitioned to your new room in Maya by a professional moving team over winter break. We strongly suggest that you bring any items of value (such as electronics, jewelry, mementos, etc.) home with you over the break.
If you have any reusable items such as clothing, bedding, etc. that you would like to donate, a Disabled American Veterans (DAV) collection bin will be available in the Olmeca lobby beginning Monday, December 3.
4) Check Out with Your RA (by Thursday, December, 20, 2018)
You will be required to check-out with your RA no later than Thursday, December 20 at 10am to confirm your:
- Personal items are properly packed and labeled and ready for the moving team
- Rooms are clean and furniture is in proper repair
- Keys are checked-in with the RA
Please sign up for your check-out time at the Olmeca front desk starting November 27th. Anyone who does not check out properly or has failed to pack their items as instructed will be subject to improper checkout fees.
5) Enjoy Winter Break (December 20, 2018 - January 21, 2018)
While you are on break, SDSU will hire licensed and insured movers to move your belongings from Olmeca to Maya. All items will be placed in the appropriate rooms prior to spring semester move-in.
Please note that students will have the same room and roommates as in Olmeca, but will be the mirrored version in Maya. We are no longer accepting room switches. Your room numbers will change. You will be given your Maya room number when you check out your transition bins. Your mailing address for Maya will be the same: 6050 Lindo Paseo, San Diego, CA 92115. As a friendly reminder, mail will not be accepted over winter break.
6) Move-in (Monday, January 21, 2018)
As Olmeca will be offline for renovation, students will use the Zura front desk to access Maya through spring semester. Starting at 10:00am on January 21, you may check into the Zura front desk to receive your key for Maya and move in to your new space.
Floor meetings will be conducted (at to-be-determined times) to orient residents to the remodeled building and expectations regarding cleaning, safety, construction activity, mail, etc.
What will be the opening date for Maya Hall?
Answer: At this moment, the residence hall will be available for move-in starting Monday, January 21, 2019.
What will be my options for room assignments Spring semester?
Answer: You will have the same room and roommates as in Olmeca, but will be the mirrored version in Maya. Room numbers will be different.
Will I be provided moving support?
Answer: Yes. The university will provide moving services to make the transition as easy as possible for impacted residents.
What will happen to Olmeca after all of the students move-out in January?
Answer: We will close the hall and begin renovations during the spring semester. As Olmeca will be offline, residents will access Maya via tha Zura entrance.
Will I be able to tour Maya before it opens?
Answer: Yes. We will be conducting tours exclusively for the Olmeca community throughout the fall semester. Please check your email for the most up to date information on these tours.
What will the amenities be in Maya?
Answer: There will be a complete refresh of student rooms, restrooms, laundry rooms, kitchen, and common areas. Student rooms will receive new flooring, window coverings, paint, HVAC and modular furniture. Restrooms will have new fixtures, toilet stalls and showers. Common area renovations will include a new kitchen, updated STAR Center, a pool table, furniture and TV’s.
How will mail be managed?
Answer: All mail will be sent to Zura after the transition. Once mail is received, the REO staff will follow the standard process for mail and packages. Residents can pick up packages in Maya during designated hours. There will be mailboxes in Maya for small envelopes. Residents can visit the mailboxes 24/7.
Will bins be provided for move out/move in?
Answer: Yes. You will be able to check out a large bin from the front desk for move out and move in. Please remember that as winter break approaches, you will want to take valuable items home with you. More details to be shared in November.
What do I do if I want to move rooms?
Answer: Follow the standard room switch process. Visit the OHA office in person to submit the room switch request form. All room switch requests must be submitted by November 9, 2018. If approved, room switches must be completed no later than November 16, 2018. For additional questions, please contact us at [email protected].
What will be the security measures?
Answer: Residents will be verified at the Zura front desk. SDSUcards must be shown 24/7. Access will be granted to the Zura first floor only. Any guests must be checked in at this same location.
When can residents move into Maya/When do residents need to be completely out of Olmeca?
Answer: Residents are able to move into Maya starting January 21st at 10 a.m. Residents need to be out of Olmeca by December 20th at 10 a.m. Access to Olmeca will be turned off on December 20th and you will turn in your mechanical key at checkout.
