Evolve Student Housing

Evolve Student Housing is planned to be a new, multi-phase construction project designed to construct 5,220 student beds, which will result in a net increase of approximately 4,468 new student beds at San Diego State University.

The phased approach ensures housing continuity, with new facilities completed before decommissioning older units. Construction is slated to begin in summer 2025 with Phase 1 and will span over five years.

Phase 1 (2025–27)

The first phase focuses on developing three key facilities:

Tarastec

A suite-style community with a private bathroom shared by roommates, designed to accommodate either first-year or sophomore students based on demand. The room layouts are similar in design to those of South Campus Plaza. The building will offer double occupancy room types.

Templo sel Sol

A community center featuring dining facilities, communal spaces, food services, conference rooms and mailing services. This space is designed to foster connection, convenience and collaboration among residents and the campus community.

University Towers East

A traditional-style hall with communal bathrooms, designed to accommodate first-year students. The building will offer double occupancy room types.

Location

The new Tarastec and Templo del Sol will be located on the west side of campus near the intersection of 55th Street and Aztec Circle Drive. Tarastec will replace the existing Tarastec apartments, while Templo del Sol will take the place of the current International Student Center.

University Towers East will be situated adjacent to the existing University Towers residence hall on Montezuma Road. University Towers East will replace the existing parking lot.

Phases 2-4

If approved, phases 2–4 will follow with timelines and specific details to be determined.

Benefits

Evolve addresses SDSU’s need for financially competitive on-campus housing by providing options for first-year, sophomore, upper-division and graduate students, while supporting the university’s two-year live-on requirement for non-local students.

The project offers a cost-effective alternative to San Diego’s escalating rental market, ensuring affordability for students and financial sustainability. Evolve also supports SDSU’s sustainability goals by reducing commuting and lowering carbon emissions.

By expanding housing capacity, improving the student living experience and advancing environmental responsibility, Evolve provides a comprehensive solution to the university’s housing needs.
